Keflavík International Airport (Arrival)
Arrive at Keflavík, collect your luggage and pick up your rental car. There's no need to rush today — your first day is built around easing in after the flight, not racing across the country.
You don't need a full week to fall for Iceland — or to catch the northern lights. This relaxed three-day loop keeps you entirely out of the city, pairing the country's most famous sights with two nights in a transparent bubble under the open sky. Soak in the Blue Lagoon on arrival, drive the Golden Circle at your own pace, and end each day watching for the aurora from your bed.
Arrive at Keflavík, collect your luggage and pick up your rental car. There's no need to rush today — your first day is built around easing in after the flight, not racing across the country.
Just 20 minutes from the airport, the Blue Lagoon is the perfect way to shed the flight before your drive. Soak in the milky-blue geothermal water, then carry on refreshed. Pre-book your entry time; luggage storage is available on site.
Drive into the capital and let your arrival time set the pace — the old harbour, Hallgrímskirkja, a stroll down Laugavegur and a first Icelandic meal. Landed late? Keep it short, or head straight for the bubble and grab dinner in Selfoss on the way.
An easy hour east brings you to your bubble in the quiet countryside near Selfoss. The walls and ceiling are clear, so from your bed you look straight up at the open sky — and on clear nights, a chance of the northern lights.
After a slow morning at the bubble, head into the Golden Circle. First stop is Þingvellir, the UNESCO-listed rift valley where you can walk in the gap between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates — the birthplace of Iceland's parliament and one of its most storied landscapes.
Watch the earth put on a show at Geysir, where the Strokkur hot spring erupts every few minutes, firing a column of boiling water into the air. Steaming vents and bubbling pools fill the whole valley — the original "geyser" that gave the phenomenon its name.
A short drive on brings you to Gullfoss, the "Golden Falls," where the glacial Hvítá river thunders down two tiers into a rugged canyon — one of Iceland's most powerful and photographed waterfalls, and the same river you'll be relaxing beside a little later.
Cap the day with a soak at Laugarás Lagoon, a striking new geothermal spa on the banks of the Hvítá. Sink into the two-level lagoon with its cascading waterfall and infinity edge over the valley, alternate between the saunas and cold plunge, and grab a drink at the swim-up bar. Time your visit for late afternoon so you're in the water as the sky darkens — in aurora season the northern lights can appear right over the river while you soak. Stay for dinner at the on-site restaurant before the short drive back to the bubble. Pre-book your time slot.
A 30-minute drive returns you to your bubble for a second night under the open sky — and a second shot at the aurora, this time from bed. If you'd like a subject for photos, a few dark spots sit a short drive away: the wide Urriðafoss waterfall (~15 min) and the little Villingaholt church (~15 min) are the quick ones, while the lone Knarrarós lighthouse on the coast (~25–30 min) is the dramatic shot on a strong night.
On the way back toward the airport, there's room for one last stop if your flight allows. In Hveragerði, the Reykjadalur valley is a short uphill hike to a naturally warm river you can bathe in — steam rising from the hillsides the whole way, and a fitting Icelandic goodbye.
Continue west to Keflavík to drop your rental car and fly home. It's about an hour from the bubble without stops, so give yourself a comfortable buffer if you've paused along the way.
